As we come to Palm Sunday, the Sunday leading up to Easter in the traditional church calendar, we are reminded of Jesus entering Jerusalem as he prepares for his death in a most unexpected way (Mark 11:1 10). Jesus enters the royal city proclaimed by the crowds as the one coming in the name of the Lord. But what made his entry unexpected in his day was that he entered Zion on a colt, an unimpressive donkey rather they a powerful warhorse.  In doing this he fulfills the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 as the king of Gods holy city who is righteous and will bring his salvation. But most vividly in this scene, he is lowly. Jesus' entry into the city reflects his character of lowliness and humility. He is the humble King.

Jesuss humility, something we dont talk about enough, was key to his ministry. Jesus, although God himself, took a lowly and dependent stature. In humility, he obeyed his fathers will. In humility, he stooped down from glory to take on the lowliness of humanity. In humility, Jesus went to the cross to bring forgiveness that we could not obtain on our own.

As we look at Jesus, we see that he is not like the leaders of this world seeking their own heights and status. Instead of taking Jesus gave. Instead of demanding he serves. The humble King shows us that he is not a tyrant to be feared or a swindler out to get us. His leadership is for our good.

As we seek to emulate his humility, failing all too often, we can take great comfort that Jesus in perfect humility has won eternal life for his people.
