Palm Sunday

As we come to Palm Sunday, the Sunday leading up to Easter in the traditional church calendar, we are reminded of Jesus entering Jerusalem as he prepares for his death in a most unexpected way (Mark 11:1 10). Jesus enters the royal city proclaimed by the crowds as the one coming in the name of the Lord. But what made his entry unexpected in his day was that he entered Zion on a colt, an unimpressive donkey rather they a powerful warhorse.  In doing this he fulfills the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 as the king of Gods holy city who is righteous and will bring his salvation. But most vividly in this scene, he is lowly. Jesus' entry into the city reflects his character of lowliness and humility. He is the humble King.

Jesuss humility, something we dont talk about enough, was key to his ministry. Jesus, although God himself, took a lowly and dependent stature. In humility, he obeyed his fathers will. In humility, he stooped down from glory to take on the lowliness of humanity. In humility, Jesus went to the cross to bring forgiveness that we could not obtain on our own.

As we look at Jesus, we see that he is not like the leaders of this world seeking their own heights and status. Instead of taking Jesus gave. Instead of demanding he serves. The humble King shows us that he is not a tyrant to be feared or a swindler out to get us. His leadership is for our good.

As we seek to emulate his humility, failing all too often, we can take great comfort that Jesus in perfect humility has won eternal life for his people.

Small Groups

Many have found getting together with a small group of people regularly has been a great benefit in their Christian walk. People have found discussing the Bible has helped them to know and trust God more. They have been able to be more confident in their knowledge of God and have gained a deeper hope that has transformed their lives.

The small groups have also given people an opportunity to encourage others. Sometimes the encouragement comes from just turning up. Other times it comes from a timely word reminding the person what God has said. At other times the encouragement comes through praying for them or offering practical help.

Through the small groups we often have opportunity to live out what we believe from the Bible.

A small group will normally consist of reading the bible together and discussing the passage. We also equip people with some skills that are helpful in the Christian life. There is usually a time where people share and pray with each other. This of course is done in a way that people can participate at a level they are comfortable with, without feeling awkward.

In fact, don’t worry about doing anything out loud. Our small groups are meant to be enjoyed from the first time you come to one. Nobody is asked directly to read out loud or even to pray. You don’t even have to share how you are going with others.

People who wish to pray do so voluntarily and those who don’t, do not feel bad.

These groups run at various times and locations.

They cater for men, women, married couples, and we are developing our young adults and youth. You are most welcome to either visit or join one of the groups. The sign up sheet is available at church still this weekend.
